Hitting All the Right Notes: Eulipia

Running a restaurant is a bit like leading a jazz band: A lot of preparation, practice and presentation go into each nightly performance, and if you do it right, you’ll attract a cadre of loyal fans. Eulipia in downtown San Jose has refined the process into an art form, serving mouthwatering New American food for more than 30 years. With its elegant atmosphere, bend-over-backwards service and innovative menu, it’s no surprise that Eulipia has garnered and held an enthusiastic following.

Named after Rahsaan Roland Kirk’s song, “Theme for the Eulipions,” Eulipia’s affinity to jazz is apparent the moment you step through the doors: Smooth music floats above the low chatter of diners in the loft-like dining room, whose exposed-brick wall, candlelit tables and jazz-themed wall artwork lend an urbane yet unpretentious air.

Start the evening off right with drink from the full bar, such as the Fletch, a lemon and raspberry martini, or a selection from the extensive wine list. For appetizers, the seasonal menu focused on comfort food includes an exceptional grilled artichoke, served with a tangy lemon aioli, as well as classics such as fried calamari with artichoke hearts, Dungeness crab cakes, and steamed clams and mussels.

Although it can be hard to narrow down your entrée choice (such enticing options as the chicken breast with melted brie, or the Atlantic salmon roasted with cashews don’t make it easy), you can’t go wrong with the grilled hanger steak with sautéed mushrooms and caramelized onions. Served in a veal and red-wine reduction, this flavorful cut of beef pairs well with roasted fingerling potatoes and vegetables.

The braised pork shoulder features all the attributes of a great roast—a rich, lingering flavor, mouthwatering aroma and tender meat that yields to your knife like butter. Accompanied by a sweet lingonberry sauce, cheddar potato gratin and roasted vegetables, this dish is as satisfying as it is delicious.

As with any great performance, you’ve got to end things on a sweet note. And what’s sweeter than Bananas Foster? Bananas are flambéed with rum and banana liqueur and served with vanilla ice cream, adding the finishing touch to an epic meal.

After the soft jazz lulls you into a post-prandial stupor, it’ll only be a matter of time before you come back to this enduring downtown restaurant. And, being the pros that they are, Eulipia’s friendly staff will be ready to give you an encore performance.
